A new oral history documentation project has been launched in Buffalo to preserve the stories, traditions, memories and cultural heritage of the Arab, Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) community.
The project, organized by Arabesques Art & Culture, brought together members of the MENA community for a special launch event featuring personal stories, music, memories, family traditions and cultural celebrations from across the region.
The initiative is made possible with support from the Erie County Historical Commission as part of the 250th anniversary of the United States, along with support from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.
The project and launch event were curated by Nada Odeh. Organizers also expressed their appreciation to Dr. Mustafa Gökçek, Akram Shibly, Paul Hage, Kassim Al Marissi, Susan Buttaccio, Councilwoman Amira H. Muflahi and Nora Bernan, along with everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, stories and talents.
Organizers said the launch marks only the beginning of a broader effort to document and preserve the community’s history. Members of the Arab, Middle Eastern and North African community are being invited to contribute personal stories, photographs, family histories, memories and traditions for future generations.
The initiative highlights the importance of preserving community history through the personal experiences and memories of its members, ensuring that these stories and cultural traditions remain accessible to future generations.
